City officials and representatives from International Management Group will announce this morning that the Samsung $ 1 million World Championship will be played Sept. 17-20 on the course of the Torrey Pines South.
The 72-hole event sanctioned by the LPGA and staged by IMG, will feature 20 of the best players in women's golf, including 2008 champion Paula Creamer Samsung and the biggest star of the Tour, Mexican Lorena Ochoa.
"Torrey Pines is held in such high esteem, and this is a tournament with the best players on the LPGA Tour, then it is a crisis attractant that works for everyone, "said Torrey Gane, tournament director of IMG who have moved into a office in San Diego recently.
An agreement to bring the 29th edition of the Samsung at Torrey Pines has been in development for over a year. The Negotiations moved slowly until after the U.S. Open was held on the 108th Field South last June. Since then, discussions have focused on matching with the dates when the courses were available Torrey.
Initially, the South Course has been booked with several large corporations during the week of September, the LPGA has designated for the tournament. The North Course is being reviewed by IMG, but after two companies canceled their reservations on the South, it became available for use in ladies golf clubs by ladies golfers.
Agreement between the City and IMG is to host the tournament this year, with an option for 2010.
Tournament week begins Monday September 14, but the practice by the players of the LPGA will be limited that day because a company outing on the South will continue as planned. The North Course will play host to its usual audience during the week, according to City Golf Manager Jon Maddern.
The agreement provides for reimbursement of IMG City fund company for lost golf green fee revenue over the South and overtime of staff during the week. Maddern said that figure to 200,000 $.
Maddern said very little work is needed to bring the South to the requirements of the LPGA. The Samsung World Championship was the brainchild of the late founder of IMG, Mark McCormick. Since 1980, it has been played at 15 sites, including Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert from of 2004-07. Annika Sörenstam is the event of all time winner with five titles.
The Half Moon Bay Golf Links hosted last year, and Creamer, a native of Northern California, was the popular winner. Gain said IMG does not keep attendance figures, but said ticket sales have increased 270 percent over the previous year at Bighorn, when Ochoa won.
"It was great attractiveness in Half Moon Bay, but I'm sure we'll have many more fans San Diego, Gane said. "It is a true golf community and the first time the LPGA has been here over 15 years. "
The field will be of superior quality. Defending champion (Creamer) and last year's winner money from the foreground (Ochoa) are already qualified.
