A new communication system for referees is implemented and we hope it will be ready for the 2006 World Cup which starts in Germany on June 9th.
It will be a way for the referee to communicate with the two assistants and fourth official during the match. Last December FIFA rejected the idea of a smart ball system that would avoid mistakes on goal-line decisions, but the Federation decided she needed more tests so it would not be ready for the next World Cup.
Three different systems are currently tested in Zurich to choose one of them. Another option they have in mind during this process is to improve one of three systems by taking the best of each.
Two important details that are tested are: always ensure that there will be no interference in the communication and people will not be able to listen to the conversations of the arbitrators. The 44 refereeing trios in the running for World Cup places gathered Tuesday for a four-day workshop to test their knowledge of the game, the English language skills, ability to manage stress, the interpretation of the rules and levels of physical and mental. On March 31st FIFA will decide how many teams arbitrator will be used during the World Cup. This number should not be higher than 36.
