Are you ready to learn rose gardening? Here are some basics to help you begin to grow roses healthy and vibrant. It is a great thing to do for you and your garden!

In a rose garden there are some overall needs. Roses do not need good garden soil, sun and water availability. We will therefore begin to learn the culture of roses where your roses will "live".

The Rose Bed

Almost all land is or can be transformed into, good garden soil. The best soil for your rose bed is well drained, fertile, light soil and at least two feet deep. A pH between 6.0 – and 6.5 is ideal. Make sure that Rose Bed receive at least 4 hours of sunshine per day, 6 hours being the better.

Buying your Roses

Roses readily available in nurseries and garden centers. They come as being "bare root" roses, or in containers (packaged).

Bare root roses, the roots are protected in a substance wet packing. Buy the roses near the planting date as possible, and plant them while they are dormant. Depending on your climate, the best planting time is late winter or early spring after all frost has thawed.

How to Plant Roses Bareroot:

1. Before planting, soak the roots in water overnight.

2. Dig a hole and make a mound land in the bottom of things. Set the plant on the mounds, spreading the roots evenly around the mound.

3. Place the rose, and the union bud is the same height as the soil surface.

4. Cover the roots with loose soil and press lightly. Add more soil until the hole is half full, then fill with water, allowing water to soak in.

5. Fill the hole with soil, and it done!

How to plant containers, or packaged, Roses

Pruning Roses:
