You work hard to prepare your child for his first day of preschool, but you have a nagging feeling that despite her brave face, she will never walk through that door without you. Some children have a hard time on the first day, especially if this is their first school experience. Do not worry. I'll tell you one of the most difficult kids I helped with the transition to the classroom, as proof that your child will do, too.
Mackenzie was undoubtedly the most difficult transition time among his peers. She clung to his mother so hard that we were not sure we would be able to detach. Mackenzie's little fingers were tangled in the hair of his mother and his legs tightly around her waist mother. Mackenzie brothers and sisters were older so that his mother knew what to expect. Although she hated to see her child so upset, she knew she could not give in.
It took two teachers to Mackenzie peeling off his mother. When we finally entered the classroom, She threw herself on the floor and cried loudly. My partner picked up and heard him put on his knees on the circle. She rubbed the back of Mackenzie, smoothed his hair and reassured her that Mom would be back soon.
It took Mackenzie about half an hour to stop crying last. When she realized she was here to stay, she ventured to explore what was happening around her. It was a Monday. Our class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday morning, Mackenzie behaved exactly the same way it had on Monday. It took two of us to take off his mother and half an hour for her to calm down. Friday saw a little progress, because one teacher was required to get into the room and calmed down in about 15 minutes.
The following Monday was bad again. After being home for two days in a row with her family, she did not return to school. After that, he was a little easier every day. He probably had a full month, but finally she came into the classroom by herself with a big smile on his face. These days we tell him how proud we were that she walked like a big girl and made her smile at school.
So Please Do not get all worked up if your child is taking some time to adapt. The more she sees your optimism and enthusiasm it will succeed together, the faster that will happen. Provides that she is safe, you'll always come back, and once it calms down, she likes school.
