I have a bowl of 6 inches wide cactus mixed. I tranplant a bigger pot. How to do it without hurting them?
Whenever I transplantation of ordinary plants, I try to keep the soil around the roots as I do. Is this necessary with cacti? They are in a kind of Sandy black. I live in an area of sandy soils. Can I use this ground as well?
Cacti are generally very shallow roots are often easy transplanting. Of course, you should keep as much soil as you can around the roots! I suggest you buy "Cactus" soil, which is available in a small bag of garden stores like Home Depot, etc. If you have sandy soil because you live in Arizona or New Mexico it will probably be OK (although that I would still buy pre-packaged ground!). If you have sandy soil because you live near the ocean, I'd certainly other purchasing pre-packaged ground! Plants prickly cactus, I use a pair of chopsticks to "grab" the plant (after loosening the soil around the plant) and lift it from its old pot and place it in the new. Cacti usually transplant well. You should have no problems! Good Luck!
